Even the Bible Says That Being Poor is a Mindset

Matthew 25:14-30 in the New Testament talks about a master handing talents over to his servants and them multiplying those talents. These servants were given a different number of talents to utilize. The one who was given five talents doubled theirs. The one with two also doubled theirs. But the one with one talent had a poverty mindset and because of this, gained nothing more.
Instead of multiplying his talent like the other servants, he buried it in fear he’d lose it. When he told his master this, he was livid that he squandered this opportunity. He told him that he should have invested his talent and that the master should have gained his talent back PLUS interest.
YOU are the master the bible talks about. It is your mental faculties that are your servants and are to be put to work.
Everyone has talents and gifts, and you are never poor, despite what your physical finances or situation look like. It is how you perceive yourself that keeps you “broke” and without.
You’ve probably heard the saying, “Your gifts will make room for you.” While writing this, I looked up exactly where this quote came from and lo and behold, another bible verse. Proverbs 18:16: “A man’s gifts make room for him and brings him before the great.” Then I scanned up the page, finding another verse that fits this topic perfectly. Proverbs 18:11 says, “A rich man’s wealth is his strong city, and like a high wall in his imaginationnnnn” *Spongebob’s voice.
Do I keep highlighting the key words, or are we on board now? I hope the answer is yes.
I’ll never forget when my mom and stepfather sat me down for a random “house meeting” at home one afternoon. Boy, did I hate those. It always seemed like there was bad news or something that would throw me off my center.
I’m not sure how we got on the topic of money during our conversation, but my stepfather blatantly told me that “according to society, I was considered poor.” Especially if I owed this and that, if my credit looked a certain way, etc. I instantly rebutted, telling him exactly what the title of this post is… that poor is a mindset!
I’ve dealt with my share of “broke-ness” in life. Whether my bank account was in the negative or felt like there was “nothing better out there” as far as jobs and pay, I had to remember that it was not always that way, would not always be that way, and know that there is true possibility to thrive in all areas of life, including financially.
I also had to look around and acknowledge all the beautiful things I did have, such as having air to breathe, food to eat every day, a roof over my head, a car to get me from point A to B, and much more. These things are also signs of wealth. Cultivating this attitude will exude gratitude and uplift your ability to receive more.
To know that you are wealthy, abundant, rich, and all the like when you may be struggling to pay bills, get up every morning and work a job you don’t necessarily love, especially if it doesn’t pay well isn’t easy by a long-shot. But there are ways to combat the negative thoughts and assumptions of self when doubt and uncertainty creep in:
· Remember the times God, Source, the Universe, your Higher Self or whatever you refer to in your spiritual practices, protected you.
This helps me the most when I experience doubt and uncertainty in my life, especially when it comes to money.
I’ll never forget the time I was short on rent and the 1st was coming up in the following week or two. I had been in between jobs and getting ready to start a new one. However, I wasn’t sure if I was gonna have the rest in time.
I didn’t know how, but I knew it would work out! How? I wasn’t sure. But I knew, and I kept that conviction in my mind.
Closer to the due date I received a letter from the unemployment office telling me they owed me money from a year-old case! I had the money to pay my rent and then some!
The year prior when I was battling their decision to not pay me the money out, I convicted that if I am truly due the money, that it would come back to me. And that’s exactly what happened.
If you’ve experienced miracles such as this or know that your situation can be a lot worse than it is, consider yourself wealthy!
· Look around!
As I mentioned earlier, there are other sources of wealth instead of a hefty bank account, such as family and friends, your favorite items, clothes on your back, food to eat, and more.
When you acknowledge these things, you don’t feel so poor.
· As the books of Matthew and Proverbs state, know that you have talents and gifts that are worth money.
I also have firsthand experience of feeling as if I was working a job for the bare minimum. While I was earning enough to pay my bills, I’d feel depleted of time to rest, recover, and explore the many other things I wanted to explore.
It’s important to give attention to the things you love or are intrigued by. Honing and/or learning new and existing skills can give us the motivation to seek and receive more in our lives, including more money.
In closing, the book of Matthew also states that if you don’t use it, you lose it. So get out of your head about your situation unless you are working to shift your mindset to a positive, rich one.
“For everyone that has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even what he has will be taken away” (Matthew 25:29).
